A well-rounded solid waste safety program requires planning, practical standard operating procedures, and regular safety training. Yet, many facilities don’t know where or how to start the process. Join this webinar to learn about the steps required to plan a safety program; identify the importance of standard operating procedures; and how to conduct a high level review of your existing safety program to identify potential deficiencies. We’ll also hear how the Sacramento County Department of Waste Management and Recycling transformed and updated its safety culture.

Transformation of a Safety Program; Sacramento County Department of Waste Management and Recycling (Sacramento County Department of Waste Management and Recycling - Tim Israel)

Tim Israel is a professional engineer and has over 25 years of solid waste engineering and planning experience.  Tim joined DWMR in 2002 and directed engineering activities at the Kiefer Landfill from 2008 until 2018.  Since that time, he has served in the capacity of Superintendent of Technical Services. 

Implementing a Comprehensive Safety Program (Blue Ridge Services - Kasem Cornelius) 

Kasem Cornelius is an Operations Consultant II with Blue Ridge Services, Inc (BRS). He holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and has completed the OSHA 500 Outreach Training Program through UC San Diego Extension Program. Since joining BRS, he has performed on-site operations evaluations, safety audits, safety training, and  provided  administrative  consulting  at  sites throughout  the  United  States.

Kasem works with municipal and private waste facilities to find practical, comprehensive safety solutions for clients. Kasem has been a part of creating BRS’s new SHERPA program. Through SHERPA, Kasem has been involved in developing Injury and Illness Prevention Plans, Standard Operating Procedures, succession planning, and other safety and training documents for all types of solid waste operations.
