Anaerobic Digestion

While AD technologies are mature in Europe, the application to North America differs. Learn about the three main types of AD technologies and their applicability, and expected outcomes. Hear lessons learned from Lystek’s food waste digestion pilot project at Goleta Sanitary District Water Resource Recovery Facility. This project uses innovative mobile units for testing and education combining depackaging, anaerobic digestion and thermal hydrolysis.

Wet AD, Plug Flow, Dry AD – How to Select Your Anaerobic Digestion Technology? (GHD - Tej Gidda, PhD, P.Eng.)

Tej Gidda, Ph.D., P.Eng., is a Principal at GHD with over 16 years of industry experience in alternative waste management and energy. He is currently GHD’s Global Leader for Future Energy, focusing the firm’s efforts on the transition in energy systems towards a lower-carbon future. This initiative includes hydrogen, renewable natural gas (RNG), traditional renewables, energy from waste, energy security and planning, and system integration, including energy storage systems. He has significant engagement in the alternative waste processing space, with a focus on biological treatment of organics, such as biosolids processing and anaerobic digestion. Additionally, Tej has worked on mixed waste processing, thermal treatment such as gasification and pyrolysis, and ancillary systems such as odor control and wastewater treatment.

Lystek’s Food Waste Digestion at Goleta Sanitary District (Lystek - Jim Dunbar, P.E.) 

Jim Dunbar, P.E., is the General Manager for California operations at Lystek International. Jim is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame (Civil/Environmental Engineering) and St. Xavier University (MBA) and a Professional Engineer with more than 25 years’ experience in the management of solid waste and treatment of liquid wastes in the US and Europe. Lystek specializes in providing solutions to biosolids and organics management. Lystek opened its first-in-the-US biosolids processing facility in Fairfield, Solano County, CA in 2016. This regional facility utilizes Lystek’s patented thermal hydrolysis process (THP) to produce a USEPA Class A biofertilizer along with other wastewater treatment enhancement products. The Fairfield operations services San Francisco Bay area wastewater facilities and is a center of research for Lystek in the development of new end-user products.
